Well, it finally happened, last night I was pulled over by a cop at around 3:00ish EST. But, time for the back story!
I just closed up the McD's that I work at in Medford NJ, and was headed home. When I got down to Tabernacle-Medford Lakes Road, I smelled smoke, faint at first then it got a tad bit heavier as I went along until I reached about a 1/4 mile away from my church. I pulled over, put my hazards on, and then started smelling around in my car, to make sure it wasn't that. After I did that for about 2 minutes, I went outside and had a look around my car, also turned up nothing, so then I thought, "Hey, it must be a forest fire about somewhere." So I hop back in my car, and flip up my cell phone, dead, lovely... I own horses down the road, and was getting worried sick that they could be in trouble without me knowing.
So I get back in my car and put it into drive. I just turn my hazard lights off when I see a set of headlights appear into the distance. I think nothing of it at the time, and continue to drive onward, the car passing me, then turning around. At this time I realized it was a cop, but still thought nothing of it, as I wasn't doing anything illegal at the time, so I drove on. I made it to the intersection of 206 and Chatsworth Rd. and stop at the stop light, the cop pulls up behind me, and turns on his blinker. So the light turns green and I speed off into the distance, the cop following me. I reved my car up, trying to see if I can get my damned transmission to kick into 5th gear, (it's a bit sticky and failed inspection because of it) at the same time, my speed reached around 65 (the speed limit is 50) So the cop turns on his lights. Instantly I begin to panic with all the stupid little thoughts and I just pulled over near a gas station, and waited for him to approach. So he comes up to me, asks for the standard stuff, license and registration. No biggie, he hands it back saying it's expired, and I was like, "What??" So he goes back and checks on his computer, sees my record is clean, then asks what I was in such a hurry for. I told him that I was tring to get home as quick as I could, because I smelled smoke, and owned a horse down the road a ways. He nodded a bit and asked me why I was all sweaty and out this late to begin with, so I told him about closing at a McDonalds, which he got a good chuckle out of. After inquiring about the actual location of the fire, he told me that it was a few miles a way, and nothing to be worried about. I thanked him, and he just gave me a verbal warning to be careful next time, and to get my registration card replaced. (And I don't know where it went, I had it in there last week for the failing car inspection)
Overall, I was shaken, but more relived in the end when I found out my horse was safe, and I must thank the officer for being nice and not giving me a ticket. ^_^ |
